lentil

Lentils vary in characteristics such as grain size, color, skin thickness, cooking time, and usage areas depending on their origin. These differences directly affect consumer preferences and pricing in both domestic consumption and international trade.

lentil types by origin

Turkish-origin lentils

are especially known for red lentil production. The grains are medium-sized, have thin skins, and cook quickly. Due to their high flavor quality, they are widely preferred for household consumption and traditional cuisine. They offer advantages in freshness and quality in the domestic market and are also competitive in regional exports.

Canadian-origin lentils

are among the strongest origins in global lentil trade. Both red and green lentils are widely produced. The grains are large, uniform, and of high visual quality. Green lentils from Canada are often considered premium grade. They are extensively used in packaged retail products, export markets, and the food industry.

Russian-origin lentils

mainly consist of red lentil varieties. The grains have a firm texture and are suitable for storage. Due to their price advantage, they are preferred for industrial use and export markets. They offer logistical advantages for countries in the Black Sea region.

Indian-origin lentils

are primarily produced for domestic consumption, though some varieties are exported. The grains may be smaller and darker in color. They are commonly used in lentil flour production or pulse blends and hold an important place in Asian cuisine.
